CELEBRATING NEURODIVERSITY

Let's chat!

Inclusion Starts Here

our practice provides tier 3 intervention services under the response-to-intervention (rti) model.

We specialize in educational therapy, psychoeducational support and intensive intervention services for persons who have already been assessed and diagnosed. Our SpEd Intervention Specialists are dedicated to neurodiversity-affirming practices that value and respect the differences in how our brains work.

Although most students respond to Tier 1 or Tier 2 instruction, some will not and may require Tier 3 intervention (special education services). This is where we get involved. Within the three-tiered R.T.I. model, a special education teacher provides the intervention, which is guided by data, individualized, and recursive. Our special education interventions are include high quality, research-validated practices, frequent progress monitoring, data-based decision making and 1:1 support.

How can educational therapy and SPED interventions help?

A child who is struggling and falling behind in school is not a happy child. Kids who have learning disorders, or attention problems that make learning unusually difficult, often suffer for several years before parents and teachers figure out that something is standing in their way.

Once a child’s learning challenges are identified, they may benefit from having a SpEd Intervention Specialist to work with them on developing the skills they are missing, and on devising learning strategies that build on their strengths and compensate for weaknesses.

Our specialization is mild/moderate diagnoses such as: Specific Learning Disabilities, Communication and Language Disorders, AD/HD & Anxiety, Intellectual Disabilities, Physical and Congenital Disabilities and Processing Speed Disorders. We also provide support for adults learners, early school-leavers and remedial students across the lifespan.

how does tutoring differ from educational therapy & psychoeducational support?

Educational therapy is a form of intervention that provides additional, specialized support to children or adults struggling with learning difficulties or disabilities. Through a combination of educational strategies and psychology and therapeutic techniques, the SpEd intervention specialists at H.L.C. can help children overcome challenges and make progress in an effective way.

Educational therapy and psychoeducational services can occur during or external to school time, and are provided on a 1:1 basis. It is different from tutoring. An academic tutor will focus on the academics  and curriculum that a student has to cover. Our practitioners use a broader method to include neurodiverse children with learning difficulties and differences. In other words, an educational therapist teaches skills and strategies that go beyond the package of a regular tutor.

Traditional tutors or teachers may not fully understand the child’s learning difficulties, although schools are doing their best to accommodate the child’s learning difficulties. On the other hand, our practitioners with background knowledge of special education, literacy interventions and psychoeducation assessment and support can meet the child’s difficulties on a psychological level while also being trained to meet the academic needs of students.

As professionals trained in special education, literacy intervention and educational therapy we aim to fill the gap between psychology and education by utilizing diagnoses and clinical assessments to design targeted, inclusive and individualized learning plans based on the specific needs of students.

Celebrating neurodiversity

We take a holistic approach to our individual education plans with the goal of improving a student’s academic performance by helping the student reach psycho-educational and social-emotional goals.

With these goals in mind, we evaluate the student’s strengths and weaknesses, help the student understand these strengths and weaknesses, develop certain learning and social-emotional strategies, and teach the student how to advocate for himself/herself. We also communicate and partner with with parents, teachers, and tutors, working together to help a student reach his or her goals.

Our practice has grown since its inception in 2015, into space that celebrates neurodiversity; a safe and nurturing haven for students who learn differently and parents who are seeking out alternative approaches to education and inclusive definitions of success.  At Holistic Learning Center, we are here to meet your needs. We make time for you.
